Complex radial head and neck fractures treated with modern locking plate fixation

Background Internal fixation of complex radial head and neck (CRHN) fractures is difficult, and postoperative complications are common. This study evaluated elbow function and patient clinical status after internal fixation of CRHN fractures with modern locking plates. Methods We included 40 patients with 41 fractures (1 bilateral lesion). In 25 patients (61%), a concomitant injury was found. Patients were an average age of 46 years (range, 22-70 years). Intraoperative C-arm CT imaging in angular stable plate osteosynthesis of distal radius fractures

The purpose of this study was to analyze the practicability and benefit of intraoperative C-arm computed tomography (CT) imaging in volar plate osteosynthesis of unstable distal radius fractures. During a 1 year period, intraoperative three dimensional (3D) imaging with the ARCADIS Orbic 3D was performed in addition to standard fluoroscopy in 51 cases. The volar angular stable plate oesteosyntheses were analyzed intraoperatively and, if necessary, improved immediately. The duration of the scan and radiation exposure dose were measured. Distal radius fractures are one of the most common injuries treated by the orthopedic surgeons representing almost 1/6 of the fractures that are treated in the emergency departments and the 75% of all fractures of the upper limb and are second only to hip fractures in elderly population. The age distribution of this kind of injury is typically bimodal with peaks in the young patients (6-25) and in the elderly patients older than 65. The purpose of this biomechanical study was to determine whether a multidirectional fixed-angle plate with locking screws or with locking pegs in the distal fragment would optimize fixation of Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) type A3 distal radius fractures.Eight pairs of fresh-frozen human distal radii were used. Background. The optimal duration of cast immobilization following distal radius fractures (DRFs) in elderly patients has not been established. Objectives. To assess the functional and radiological parameters following DRF treatment in elderly patients using 2 different periods of cast immobilization. Materials and methods.
